The Balmain years - house, studio, workshop
From 1972 - 2000 Madigan lived in the Sydney inner west harbour suburb of Balmain. The first years were in a rental flat in Balmain East, which she soon supplemented with an adjoining flat dedicated as a workshop area. In the 1980s she was able to purchase a house in Balmain, which offered an ideal space for working: a converted colonial weatherboard and brick house with large indoor open space (increasingly used as a workspace), a double garage-sized brick workshop with driveway access, and a garden for outdoor stone work.
